A bomb has been found under the car of a former police officer in Northern Ireland, police have confirmed.
The man found the device as he left his home in east Belfast on Friday morning to take his 12-year-old daughter to school.
It was only through the former policeman's own vigilance of checking under his vehicle that the device was discovered, PSNI Chief Superintendent Nigel Grimshaw said in a news conference.
The device has been made safe and Army bomb disposal experts say the device has all the hallmarks of dissident republicans at work.
The discovery comes two weeks after letter bombs were sent to the Chief Constable of the Police Service of Northern Ireland as well as the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Theresa Villiers.
The PSNI says the bomb is a reminder that the threat level in Northern Ireland is severe and has been for some time.
