Gibraltar Standoff Ends: Ship Leaves Port

A Spanish ship that entered Gibraltar waters and refused to leave has now departed the port after a 20-hour standoff.

The departure comes after the Foreign Office summoned the Spanish Ambassador Federico Trillo to try and resolve the incident.

The survey vessel entered the Gibraltar Port on Monday and refused direct orders from a British Royal Navy patrol boat to leave.

A Royal Navy Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat (RHIB) pulled alongside the ship to try and prevent it lowering equipment into the sea.

In a statement released this afternoon, Prime Minister David Cameron's office said its view on the disputed territory remains unchanged.

"Our view on this, about the importance of the territorial integrity of our sovereign waters, is unchanged. It's very important. We have communicated that to the Spanish government."

His office said Britain's relationship with Spain is important but it will not compromise on Gibraltar.

"Clearly our relations with the Spanish government are important to us. We work with them in a number of areas. Where we have differences we will make those very clear and intend to do that."
